Common Household Products that Remove Carpet Stains

Isopropyl rubbing alcohol is inexpensive, easy to find, and has many uses, including removing ink stains from carpeting.

The best way to remove a carpet stain is to act fast and treat it immediately. There are many stain-removing products at the store, but sometimes, there isn’t time to go to the store and return before the stain sinks deeply into the carpet. Luckily, many common household cleaning products can help remove or at least stop the spread of carpet stains. The following tips explain how to remove common carpet stains with everyday household products so the stains don’t sit for too long on the carpet and cause permanent damage.

Pet stains

The occasional carpet stain is an inevitable part of owning a pet, so homeowners should be ready to take action when a stain does occur. The first useful solution is one teaspoon of clear, family-type ammonia combined with a half cup of cold water. This solution can be put in a spray bottle and applied to the carpet directly. After applying the solution, blot the stains with paper towels and then leave the spot to dry completely.

Another option is to combine one teaspoon of hand or dish soap with one quart of water. The hand or dish soap helps to extract oils from the carpeting. Be sure, however, that the soap doesn’t contain bleach or lanolin.

Lastly, sometimes, applying water to a stain is enough. The water moistens the stain, which loosens the particles, making the stain easier to extract. Additionally, many pet stains can be removed with a steam cleaner, as the boiling water loosens the stain particles and sucks them out of the carpet. Be sure to dry the vicinity after water or steam cleaning, as wet carpets are susceptible to dirt stains and damage from pressure. Vacuuming the wet carpet speeds up the drying process, quickly returning the carpets to usable condition.

Ink stains

Isopropyl rubbing alcohol is inexpensive, easy to find, and has many uses, including removing ink stains from carpeting. It’s essential, however, to remove an ink stain as soon as it happens, as the ink particles can quickly penetrate and damage the carpet fibers.

Pour the isopropyl rubbing alcohol on a white towel, cloth, or paper towel; be sure to use white, as any type of colored or printed towel could bleed more ink onto the carpet. Blot the stain until it’s entirely removed. Use careful precision and only blot the stained part of the carpet. If a clean part of the carpet is accidentally blotted, the stain could spread, worsening the problem.

Beer and wine stains

To quickly and easily remove a beer or wine stain, combine a small amount of white vinegar with equal water. Apply the solution to the stain with a spray bottle. Let the solution sit on the stain for 10 to 15 minutes. Then, use a sponge and slowly rub out the stain. Once the stain is gone, rinse the spot with warm water. Then, brush the carpet fibers back to their natural pattern. Do not touch the spot until it has completely dried.

Time is crucial in removing stains from a carpet. Knowing how to utilize everyday household products against stains ensures that quick action is taken so the stains are not left to sit and cause irreversible damage to the carpet.
